Hours of Idleness-A Photographer's Journey in St. Louis

Nikon Camera Systems

The Nikon Corporation has been in business continuously since 1917, and has seen a lot of change. From a civilian focus to a military one (Nikon manufactured optical devices for the Japanese war machine in WWII, just like many other companies, who made things useful to their militaries, have done in times of war) to back to a civilian one; from a lens manufacturer to a camera and lens manufacturer to a camera, lens, and sensor manufacturer. Nikon has flourished, and today remains the largest and most successful brand, without the support of broad-based electronics development (long ago, Nikon made optics its mission, and it has stuck to achieving it). In any case, I am not a camera historian, and there are undoubtably numerous better resources online for you to read about the history of Nikon, including this great timeline from Nikon itself.
