Hours of Idleness-A Photographer's Journey in St. Louis

Hawaii and Cruise, Days 1-2

Days one and two were spent on Oahu, the most populous of the Hawaiian islands and center of the State’s government. Oahu is home to Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head (an inactive volcano), Pearl Harbor, Byodo-In Temple and so much more. The clocktower in the photograph above is Aloha Tower; completed in 1926, this building was once the tallest structure in Hawaii.

The first day was a long and tiring journey to reach our destination, combined with the slow process of embarkation (needless to say, we did not get out into the city on day one). On day two, we elected to take a free bus tour that was being offered, which transported us through Downtown Honolulu, Punch Bowl and Chinatown before depositing us at Pearl Harbor.

While on the bus, I took notice of how my travel companions were using their cameras; there was an experiential aspect to their picture-making, sort of like using the camera in the moment was proof of their being there. I watched as one individual took a picture out of the bus window, and their flash went off (therefore ruining the shot and creating an awful reflected glare throughout most of their image). After this happened, I saw them check the photograph they had just made on the rear LCD screen, and undeterred, continue to make images this way. This of course got me to thinking about the relationships that we have with our cameras, and the images that result from them. It was quite apparent to me that making “beautiful and correct” images was not the primary concern for my camera-wielding fellow travelers, and I let this influence how I made my own pictures for the rest of the trip. Thus, in each of the sets of images that follow, you may notice that tourists are seemingly ever-present or that some of the compositions are unconventional; this is intentional (and was a lot of fun!).
