Hours of Idleness-A Photographer's Journey in St. Louis

Interlude: PFSTL Top Ten, #3. Bevo Mill

Photo Flood Saint Louis turns four this August.  This post is a continuation of a countdown to commemorate this exciting milestone.

It is perhaps unsurprising that the south side’s most recognizable architectural feature would make it onto this list.  However, namesake aside, the Bevo Mill neighborhood is distinctive due to its cultural richness.  After all, the St. Louis area features the largest population of former Yugoslavic peoples outside of the Balkans, and this neighborhood is the local epicenter.

Passing by the intersection of Gravois and Morganford, there is a predictable reaction for both children and first-time viewers alike of the massive, rotating windmill built there.  It is a look of pure joy mixed with puzzlement – “wow!”  along with “how did that get there?”  Truthfully though, that sense of wonderment does not end with seeing the structure, but thrives as one walks through the neighborhood.  Bevo Mill is full of eastern European influence, from sights to sounds to smells, so much so, that you might for a moment believe that you’ve been magically transported to Sarajevo.

Photographically, Bevo Mill is ridiculously full.  On our visit, there were plenty of people out in the street, and the neighborhood is just really good in terms of architectural diversity and density.  This was the first Photo Flood that I shot on my Nikon D200, and I think that it did a splendid job, despite the almost ten year old sensor technology.  For lenses, I brought along the Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G, and I believe this was my last Flood using that before I sold it for more primes.

This was also one of the first Floods that I invited my photo students to attend, which means that several current members got their start at this event.
